America’s Got Talent’s Heidi Klum Reveals Why She’s Actually ‘Upset’ With Sofia Vergara
Sofia Vergara is coming back to America’s Got Talent after stepping back from Fantasy League. She’ll return to judge alongside Simon Cowell, Howie Mandell, and Heidi Klum, but the latter recently revealed why she is “upset” with the Griselda star. Are Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara still friends after America’s Got Talent?
America’s Got Talent (also known as AGT), is the American talent competition in the Got Talent franchise created by Simon Cowell. A variety of participants from across the U.S. and around the world come on the show and perform a range of talents, from singing and dancing to magic and stunts. The goal of the participants is to secure a spot in the live episodes of the season by performing in front of a panel of judges.
The show has inspired several global spinoffs, including America’s Got Talent: Fantasy League, which premiered in January 2024. Cowell, Mandel, and Klum returned to host Fantasy League, while Vergara was replaced by former AGT judge Mel B. The likely reason why Vergara was missing from Fantasy League was to do promo for her Netflix show Griselda, which premiered on January 25, 2024. However, neither Vergara nor NBC has officially revealed the reason for her absence.
The Modern Family star played Griselda Blanco (known as the “Godmother of Cocaine”), an infamous Colombian drug lord who dominated the Miami underworld in the 1980s. “There were many similarities with her that I felt that I connected,” Vergara said in a January 2024 interview with CBS News. “I lived in Colombia during the 1970’s, ’80s and ’90s when the narco traffic was crazy. My brother died in that era. He was killed because he was part of that business
In an interview with People in November 2023, Vergara said she looked forward to the limited series and shared plans for a press tour in early 2024 when Fantasy League was airing. When the series dropped, Griselda rose to the No. 1 spot on the Netflix charts in the U.S. for weeks.
Thankfully, Vergara will return to the judging panel for the upcoming Season 19 of America’s Got Talent, which premieres on May 28. On the red carpet for the AGT Season 19 premiere, Klum spoke to Entertainment Tonight about Vergara and revealed why she was “upset” with her.
While Klum said she was really happy for Vergara because of her Netflix show’s success, she called it a missed casting opportunity for herself. “I was upset because I was like, ‘Why couldn’t I have been one of your cousins?’ I could have been a cousin that doesn’t speak, because obviously I don’t speak Spanish,” the model said with a laugh. “But I could have just been, you know, not speaking! I was upset.”
She added, “I could have also been one of those gorgeous girls! I would have loved to. But she said, ‘Nein.’”
Although Klum didn’t get a chance to guest star in Griselda, she revealed that she and her fellow judges spend quite a bit of time together off-set, especially Vergara.
“I mean, we all also do other things — so, you know, sometimes when I’m not here I do a lot of other shows… I have a lot of kids, too. So I wish I can spend more time with [my co-judges]. But I feel like we do see each other a fair amount,” she explained. “I always have like dinners with Sofia or go to her house and, you know, we do, like, girly things together.”
On the red carpet, Entertainment Tonight also spoke with Vergara, who shared that she and Klum are always “taking care of each other,” especially on long production days.
We look at each other and it’s like, ‘You need more lipstick,’ or, ‘Your hair is not right.’ We’re always taking care of each other,” Vergara said. “I love that.” The actress continued, “We’re always trying to have fun in between, ’cause you go crazy on the set for too many hours,” she added.
