Prince Harry’s subtle ‘cut-off’ gesture hinted at tension in first interview with Meghan
Prince Harry gave away some telltale signs about tensions within the Royal Family long before they came to light, a body language expert has revealed.
Back in November 2017, Harry and his new-fiancée Meghan Markle sat down for their first interview together, in which they spoke about the start of their romance and wedding plans.
The couple were asked about Meghan’s introduction to members of the Royal Family – including the then-Prince Charles, and Prince William and Kate. And they had nothing but good things to say.
It was exciting. I mean I’ve – you know I’d been seeing her for a period of time when I – literally didn’t tell anybody at all,” Harry said
And then William was longing to meet her and so was Catherine, so you know being our neighbours we managed to get that in a couple of – well quite a few times now and Catherine has been absolutely …” “Wonderful,” Meghan interjected. “Amazing, as has William as well,” Harry agreed. “And then my father as well.
“A handful of teas and meetings and all sorts of gatherings over at his place as well. So no, the family together have been absolutely, you know, a solid support and my grandparents as well have been – have been wonderful throughout this whole process and they’ve known for quite some time. So how they – how they haven’t told anybody is – is again a miracle in itself. But now the whole family have come together and have been a huge amount of support
However, according to body language expert Judi James, a very telling gesture performed by Harry in that interview hinted at tensions – years before they would come to the fore.
And it all comes down to the moment the interviewer asks Harry about introducing Meghan to his father and his brother. “Harry performs some fast blinks to suggest a burst of adrenaline and then he looks down in a cut-off gesture to conceal his eye expression and therefore – possibly – his true feelings,” she told the Express
He then looks to his side as though recalling the moment and his lips clamp rather than move in speech. The ‘Ah…’ from Harry sounds telling, as though he is debating whether to tell all or not. He performs an asymmetric smile that suggests he could say more.”
Harry and Meghan’s engagement interview was thrust back into the spotlight at the end of last year, when the couple talked about it in their controversial Netflix series.
Meghan branded it an “orchestrated reality show” and claimed it was rehearsed with the couple told what to do. But BBC interviewer Mishal Husain hit back at the claims and simply said: “Recollections may vary” – the same phrase used by the late Queen in the aftermath of Harry and Meghan’s Oprah interview.
