‘Powerful’ Adele cover wows ‘The Voice’ judges. Hear singer’s ‘incredible’ performance

An Alabama singer belted out a “powerful” Adele cover — and wowed the celebrity judges on “The Voice.”

Asher HaVon, a 31-year-old from Selma, is accustomed to performing at church. But he took his talents to a bigger stage when he sang “Set Fire to the Rain” in the blind auditions that aired Monday, March 4.

“What an incredible voice you have,” country star Reba McEntire said in a YouTube video from the episode. “Your range, your power.

McEntire was one of several judges to turn their chairs around, a sign they were fans of HaVon’s audition. Judges Chance the Rapper and Dan + Shay also joined in the praise — and vied for a chance to coach the contestant.

Everything that you did was phenomenal, like it was next level,” Chance the Rapper said, adding that he turned his chair right away.

HaVon even earned a shoutout from singer John Legend, the sole judge who didn’t rotate his chair.

HaVon’s big break came when he was able to perform in front of President Barack Obama during one of his hometown’s Civil Rights commemorations,” NBC wrote on its website. “But even with such a high-profile gig under his belt, HaVon still spent most of his time since performing for his church, unaware that he’d one day get the chance to leave Alabama and head to ‘The Voice’ stage.”

Dan + Shay have branded themselves the 2-for-1 deal of NBC’s “The Voice,” but there’s no outselling the Team Legend package.

The country pop duo and coach John Legend eagerly competed for the vocal prowess of Nebraska singer Bryan Olesen, formerly of the Christian rock band Newsboys, during the third round of blind auditions Monday. The 49-year-old wowed with his dynamic rendition of “Love Runs Out” by OneRepublic.
Legend compared Olesen’s captivating stage presence to U2 frontman Bono. “You have so much chops and everything you need to be a great superstar,” he said.

Olesen also brought his daughter Jadyn onstage, and the two performed an impromptu cover of Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Put Your Records On.” The duet prompted Dan + Shay to leverage their duo status, inviting Olesen and his daughter to sit in their two-person chair.

“Remember, we’re the only ones with room for two here,” Dan Smyers said, to which Legend quickly replied, “Sit next to me, Bryan. I need to whisper some more sweet nothings into your ear.”

Sorry Dan + Shay, I got Bryan,” said Legend in a post-audition interview. “At least you have each other. You can console each other.”
