Notable Absences: Simone Biles, Suni Lee Among Top Stars Sitting Out U.S. Classic
For the first time since 2022, the U.S. Classic will crown a new champion — and notably, it will not be Simone Biles.
As the prestigious gymnastics event returns to Hoffman Estates, Illinois, on July 18–19, several of the sport’s most prominent figures, including Biles and fellow Olympic gold medalist Suni Lee, will not be participating. This marks a significant shift in the competitive landscape, with none of the 2024 podium finishers scheduled to compete this weekend.
Biles, a seven-time U.S. Classic champion and the most decorated gymnast in history, won the title in 2024 ahead of five-time World medalist Shilese Jones and Olympic teammate Jordan Chiles. However, Biles has yet to announce her return to competition. Earlier this year, she attended the ESPY Awards, where she was honored with both Best Female Athlete and Best Championship Performance.
“I’m really enjoying my time off before I decide [on competing],” Biles said in an interview with Olympics.com in April.
Shilese Jones, once considered a near lock for the 2024 Olympic team, was forced to withdraw from contention due to an injury sustained during the U.S. Olympic Trials. While she won’t be competing, Jones will be present at the U.S. Classic in a different capacity — coaching and mentoring younger gymnasts during the Hopes Championships.
With many of the sport’s top athletes taking time away, the 2025 U.S. Classic provides a unique platform for rising stars to step into the spotlight and begin making their mark in the post-Olympic era.
