Jay Slater’s mum has said she “wants to see” her son “one last time” after police confirmed the body they found fallen on rocky terrain was the missing teenager’s.

However, a family spokesperson said they are ”not sure that’s a memory” Debbie Duncan ”will want”. Debbie’s son was discovered dead ”after the best part of a month” having disappeared in Tenerife

Spanish authorities announced that human remains had been found in the Masca area of Tenerife at around 10am on Monday, four weeks after the 19-year-old went missing. A post-mortem confirmed a body found in the search for is that of the missing teen.

A family spokesman told The Sun: “Formal identification of Jay’s body will be done using a DNA sample provided by the family to the Spanish Guardia Civil during the early stages of the search. There should be no need for the family to have to perform a formal identification. Debbie has said she wants to see him one last time. Obviously that’s a personal voice but given he’s been there the best part of a month in those conditions, I’m not sure that’s a memory she will want.”

A court spokesperson in Tenerife said fingerprints confirmed the body to be Jay, who was discovered alongside his clothes and personal belongings. A source close to the family, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, said: “Debbie is completely devastated. It’s the news they’ve all been dreading.

“She has a lot of questions which she hopes will be answered in the coming days. It hasn’t completely sunk in yet. The hardest thing for her is to hear he was found so close to the original search site. It’s hard to take. It means it’s entirely possible they have walked past his body whilst searching for him.

On Monday, a spokesperson for the Civil Guard said: “After 29 constant days of searching the lifeless body of the young man has been found in the Masca area. The discovery has been possible thanks to the tireless and discreet search carried out by the Civil Guard over these 29 days.”

Jay had disappeared on June 17 after he decided to walk back to his accommodation alone through the rural Masca village. Helicopters, drones and search dogs were deployed as pressure mounted to locate the teen.

After the heartbreaking confirmation that Jay’s body had been found, his mum Debbie shared a statement saying the family’s “hearts are broken”. In a statement issue through charity LBT Global, Debbie said: “I just can’t believe it – we’re here with the embassy staff waiting for an update and now it’s come – the worst news

Matthew Searle MBE, was talking to Jay’s mum at the time the news of the identification broke and said she and Jay’s family were devastated by the news. He said: “The announcement does seem to confirm that Jay died of injuries consistent with an accidental fall from a considerable height. There will of course be many more hurdles for the family to face in the coming days and we will work the them to make this horrific time as easy as possible.

“We are working with the family now to sort out the next steps of taking Jay home, recovery of his belongings and laying him to rest back. We will not be releasing details of travel timings or funeral arrangements at this time and ask again for privacy for the family. I ask now that this is the end of all the hurtful comments on social media and elsewhere.”

Debbie, lost for words, added: “I just can’t believe this could happen to my beautiful boy. Our hearts are broken.”
