Mum who went into labour at Taylor Swift concert opens up about ordeal
A new mum who went into labour at one of Taylor Swift’s Melbourne concerts has opened up about her baby’s swift entrance and her touching tribute to the pop star.
Tenille Smith gave birth to Sloane Tayla early Saturday, just hours she joined 96,000 fans at the MCG for the first show of the Australian leg of Swift’s The Era Tour.
The mother-of-two appeared on Sunrise on Tuesday with her husband Josh and three-day-old Sloane to recall the dramatic ordeal and why her baby’s middle name is spelt differently from the Grammy award winning pop star.
‘Look, it actually is my middle name so boy or girl, that’s what it was going to be — but now there is a better story behind it, something for her 21st,’ Ms Smith said.
On Friday night, a heavily pregnant but excited Ms Smith shared a pre-concert selfie of herself outside the MCG, unaware that she would soon experience contractions.
’39+5 and we’ve made it to Taylor Swift,’ she captioned the post.
During the concert, she texted her husband to say they may need to make a mercy dash to the hospital afterwards.
Ms Smith recalled initially being in ‘sort of in denial’.
‘There was an opportunity to sit down, and I texted my husband saying he will have to pick me up after the concert, and we’re going to have to head (to the hospital),’ she said.
‘I just said I’m going to have to leave straight away, there is no way I am catching public transport and having a baby on there.’
Mr Smith said he didn’t realise Tenille was in labour, until he picked her up outside the stadium.
‘Once I got there I realised she was in labour and I didn’t bring (any of her clothes) with me,’ he said.
‘I wanted to take her to the hospital, but she didn’t want to go in her cowboy boots, so we had to make a quick dash home and got there in the nick of time.’
Ms Smith left the concert at 11.30pm to go went home and get changed.
Baby Sloane made her grand entrance less than two hours later at 1.20am, mere minutes after making it to the hospital.
‘It was definitely a swift exit,’ Ms Smith quipped.
The proud mum later announced Sloane’s dramatic arrival on her Instagram account.
‘Sloane Tayla Smith. Making a quick entrance on February 17th, weighing 3.7kg at 1.20am,’ she wrote.
‘Approximately 2 hours after the Swiftie concert concluded. The perfect addition to our little family.’
Ms Smith also shared a photo of newborn Sloane wearing what appeared to be a tiny little Swiftie friendship bracelet.
