How Mike Dunleavy Jr will react to Stephen Curry’s Warriors trade comments, Bobby Marks names dream signing Dan Coombs Dan Coombs Thu 16 January 2025 15:00 The Golden State Warriors face a decision whether to try and go all out to maximize the late stages of Stephen Curry’s career, or not. Late December rumors linking LeBron James with the Golden State Warriors feel a long way away right now. Golden State are battling to make the play-in tournament right now, currently 10th in the Western Conference with a middling 20-20 record. Star player Stephen Curry urged his team not to make a crazy trade, saying they must be responsible for the future. He also pointed out the 76ers big spend on Paul George, as vindication why the Warriors might be right to be sensible. ESPN’s Bobby Marks followed up on the comments, and believes Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy Jr will be a relieved man. Marks said: “I thought what Steph Curry said after that Toronto game was one of the most fascinating things I have heard an NBA player say. And if I was Mike Dunlevy Jr, I would be thinking, thank God he said it right? More NBA News “Like as far as, hey, like ‘we’re not gonna do a quick fix. We’re gonna, we’re, you know, sometimes you gotta be smart about these things and knee jerk reaction’ and stuff like that.” Marks went on to assess the Warriors’ poor hand, which leaves them with little room to make a swing mid-season, without giving up their most valuable non-Curry assets. He explained: “With Golden State, it’s a guy, it’s like a guy playing cards, right? You know, you gotta stack of chips at the table and eventually you just see the chips go down and down and then you just figure out, ‘you know what, I just need to walk away, right? I need to pick up my chips and walk away’. “I don’t see their, a big swing out there and I think it might disappoint the fan base in Golden State.” He added that the only move for the Warriors may simply be to move on Gary Payton or Kevon Looney to try and get under the luxury tax, a move to financial benefit, but one unlikely to make the difference. He argued this was more common sense than trading Andrew Wiggins and Jonathan Kuminga and future draft picks for a Zach LaVine. Waiting could benefit Golden State While the NBA Championship may be beyond the Warriors this season, Marks pointed out that by waiting now, a better opportunity could come their way in the off-season. “You know, because eventually, and I don’t know when it’ll be, there’ll be something better come July. “Usually it happens that way. Multiple teams get knocked out, guys get mad, players wanna be traded, somebody knocked outta the first round or doesn’t play make the play-in will become available. “I don’t know, maybe Zion becomes available,” Zion Williamson is an interesting name, a former NBA first round draft pick, who has been unable to fulfil his potential on the New Orleans Pelicans. Williamson could do with a fresh start, and on the Warriors, he would not need to be the face of the franchise, but support Curry, and could benefit from the veteran leadership on the team.
