Coco Gauff was shocked when told about record she had just set at Indian Wells

Coco Gauff barely defeated Clara Burel 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) on Saturday in the Round of 64 at Indian Wells to set a record for most WTA 1000 wins as a teenager with 50. She was shocked when the interviewer told her about the milestone during the postgame interview.

Gauff, who turns 20 years of age on March 13, will have the opportunity to extend her record to 51 wins when she faces Lucia Bronzetti in the third round on Monday.

I didn’t know that was the record. I have the most? Oh okay. Yeah I didn’t know that. I thought a couple people were ahead of me,” Gauff said. “That’s pretty cool … hopefully I can close this chapter of my life off good.

“I’m really happy with how my teenage years went. I did everything I wanted to do. The biggest one was to win a major as a teenager. Hopefully I can win a couple more in my 20s. Age is just a number.”

Gauff trailed 4-0 and then 5-2 in the third set of her opening match in the tournament, leaving her a game away from becoming the second top American upset by Burel this year.

The No. 47-ranked player from France beat No. 5 Jessica Pegula in the second round of the Australian Open.

Gauff, who last year won the US Open, is the third seed at Indian Wells and the fan-favorite to win the whole thing.
