Adele Is The First Woman To Reach A Major Milestone On Billboard’s Albums Chart
Adele is in between albums right now, and she’s comfortable in Las Vegas, where she’s been headlining her own residency for years. While the world waits for new music from the superstar–which might not come for quite some time, according to the singer herself–her most successful release is still going strong.
21 by Adele hits 600 weeks on the Billboard 200 this frame. The title is now the first album by a female musician to reach that milestone in the history of the ranking of the most-consumed full-lengths and EPs in the U.S.
This week, 21 falls slightly on the Billboard 200, dipping from No. 172 to No. 176. According to information shared by Luminate, the title moved another 8,167 equivalent units in the past tracking period. That sum includes both actual purchases and streaming activity.
People listening to 21 and the songs featured on it on platforms like Spotify are doing the most to keep Adele’s project going after so many years. The title only sold a little more than 550 copies in the past tracking week, so clearly streams are helping keep it afloat.
21 is the eleventh-longest-charting title in the history of the Billboard 200. It is currently just 14 frames behind Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Adele’s biggest win is only six turns in front of AC/DC’s Back in Black.
Adele was already a rising star and a Grammy winner by the time she released 21, but the album turned her into a global phenomenon. The title went to No. 1 almost everywhere and has thus far been certified 14-times platinum for moving at least 14 million units in the U.S. alone. The title spun off three Hot 100 rulers in America–“Rolling in the Deep,” “Someone Like You,” and “Set Fire to the Rain”–and several other wins. 21 was named Album of the Year at the Grammys, while “Rolling in the Deep” collected both Record and Song of the Year.
