Jennifer Aniston took the stage at the 2024 People’s Choice Awards to celebrate her ‘brother from another mother’, long-time co-star and friend Adam Sandler, with the coveted People’s Icon Award. “Tonight, I am here to recognise my very good friend. My brother from another mother. And extraordinary father, husband and one of the most loyal friends you could ever, ever, have,” the F.R.I.E.N.D.S star began. Other winners at people’s Choice Awards included Taylor Swift and boyfriend Travis Kelce, America Ferrera taking the Movie Performance of the Year trophy for Barbie. The Greta Gerwig-directed film also won Movie of the Year honour. Grey’s Anatomy took the award for Show of the Year, Rachel Zegler was chosen as Action Movie Star of the Year for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce win

After being each other’s cheerleaders in areas of their respective expertise, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce both emerged as winners at the People’s Choice Awards. While Swift bagged four trophies — female artist, pop artist, concert tour and social celebrity, Kelce took home athlete of the year award.

The 55-year-old actress may have given the red carpet a miss, she still managed to steal the show at 2024 People’s Choice Awards with a dazzling appearance, on Sunday night. The Horrible Bosses actress turned heads on stage in a timeless strapless black dress as she presented her friend Adam with the award.

As Adam got up from his chair, Jennifer interrupted, “No, sit down, Adam, I’m not done! Sit down! Eager to get up here! I love you.” She then said, “I mean, the Sand Man. Who’s more iconic than Adam Sandler, seriously?” Jennifer asked, making the crowd cheer on the actor. Her subsequent walk down memory lane, from the Uncut Gem actor’s Saturday Night Live (SNL) beginnings to his diverse filmography, music tours, and enduring loyalty.

And yet in all of this extraordinary success, he has stuck to his roots; he’s never strayed from the friends he’s had for 35 years and counting. He created a world where he brings them into his movies — basically getting to hang out with his buddies all day. And it doesn’t hurt that his friends happen to be some of the most talented and hilarious writers and actors out there,” said Adam’s Murder Mystery co-star.

In a career that spans over three decades, Adam’s comedic touch has made the audiences. His films, including box office successes like Grown Ups, The Longest Yard, and Hotel Transylvania, have raked in over $3 billion worldwide and become fan favourites on Netflix.

This moment marked a full circle for Jennifer who received the same honour herself in 2019. Jennifer, highlighting the love and camaraderie they share, expressed, “Being his friend has been one of the great joys of my life. I’m proud to honour tonight, and I’d happily keep honouring him for decades and decades to come because he deserves all the love in the world.”

A heartwarming video montage later, Jennifer proudly announced, “Please welcome the People’s Icon, Adam Sandler!” Adam, visibly touched, joined the ranks of fellow honourees like We’re The Millers actress herself, Halle Berry, Jennifer Lopez, Melissa McCarthy and Ryan Reynolds.

At the award ceremony held on Sunday and hosted by Simu Liu, in his acceptance speech, the actor, writer and producer joked that he had mistakenly heard his agent tell him that he had earned People’s Sexiest Man Alive title. “Thank you for recognising me as the man who made our entire country the horniest this year and was by far the most-talked-about person in the bedroom,” he added.
