Coco Gauff hits out at Miami Open after thrashing opponent in round two
Coco Gauff has hit out at the Miami Open for giving players “unrealistic times” for their matches on Friday. Rain caused severe disruption to the entire schedule with many stars unable to get on court to fulfil their fixtures.
Gauff was due to start her campaign on the main show court at 11am local time, after receiving a bye in the first round. However, the American did not face Argentinian qualifier Nadia Podoroska until gone 5pm.
Gauff was made to sit around at the venue all day in hope that the rain would stop. And she felt that tournament organisers were giving start times that were unfeasible because of the weather forecast.
“I came as normal schedule, even I knew it was going to rain. Shortened my warm-up before I hit so I could get a chance to hit. I did hit 15 minutes at, like, 9 in the morning. Don’t know if that made a difference because we played so much later,” Gauff said.
Yeah, I was just waiting around, talked to some folks, played some games, read. It felt like a long wait. I was kind of not sure when to eat. Also the tournament was giving us unrealistic ‘not before’ times, so that felt a little bit weird, too.”
