Iga Swiatek, Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff nominated for Laureus World Sports Awards
Iga Swiatek, Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff have been nominated for the Laureus World Sports Awards.
Swiatek is nominated for World Sportswoman of the year award, with Djokovic listed in the men’s category, whilst US Open champion Gauff is one of the contenders for the World Breakthrough of the year prize.
Djokovic had a year to remember in 2023, winning the Australian Open, before becoming the record-holder for singles Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros. The Serb put the icing on the cake by tasting victory in the US Open. Swiatek is only the 10th player to spend 90 weeks or more at the top of the WTA Rankings, while American Gauff enjoyed her maiden triumph at a Grand Slam, with the teenager becoming the youngest winner at Flushing Meadows from the United States since 1999.
First held in 2000, the Laureus Sports Awards recognises the greatest and most inspiring accomplishments made by athletes around the globe. Lionel Messi won Sportsman of the Year in 2023, with Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce picking up the women’s award. Carlos Alcaraz took the prize for Breakthrough of the Year after winning his first Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2022.
