Breaking News: Juan Martin del Potro admits to having same stance on men’s tennis as Coco Gauff did
It seems that Coco Gauff isn’t the only one just interested in watching the elite when it comes to men’s tennis. The American star, who captured her first Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open, made some notable comments last week after getting her Madrid Open campaign underway, though the 20-year-old later fell to defeat to Madison Keys on Monday
I watch women’s tennis like all the time. I will say, when I was younger it was the only tennis I watched,” she said, when asked about her love of the sport growing up. “I honestly only knew Roger, Rafa and Novak (in the men’s game) at that time, and I didn’t even watch them play.
“So then when I got more into the sport and I started playing junior tournaments and being at the Slams with the guys then I was like, maybe I’ll watch them. And still, I would only watch Roger, Rafa and Novak, actually I did watch (Juan Martin) Del Potro a little bit.”
And her mention of the Argentinian, himself a winner at Flushing Meadows back in 2009, has seemingly prompted the 35-year-old to agree. The perception has long been of Del Potro that his career achievements didn’t reflect his talent, but he competed in an era where ‘Big Four’ were dominant.
That quartet consisted of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Andy Murray. The Swiss maestro has since retired, while both Nadal and Murray are expected to walk away from the sport at the end of the 2024 season.
“I think we should accept that an era of tennis is slowly coming to an end,” Del Potro told Serbian publication Blic. “Roger has retired, but his legacy will live on forever. Now Rafa gives himself the pleasure of retiring as he wants.
