Breaking News: COCO GAUFF MARCHES INTO FOURTH ROUND AT 2024 MADRID OPEN
Coco Gauff marched into the fourth round of the Madrid Open following a resounding 6-4, 6-1 victory over the Ukraine’s Dayana Yamstremska on Saturday (27 April).
The 2023 US Open champion set up an all-American clash against Madison Keys for a spot in the quarterfinals at the WTA 1000-level event.
Gauff continues to look at home on clay as she goes into the next round with some confidence after not dropping a set in her last two encounters. The 20-year-old made a stunning start to the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash over Arantxa Rus in her first match.
Gauff had to work hard for her victory with Yamstremska threatening to take the first after winning four straight games. But unforced errors cost the Ukraine player with Gauff taking the first set.
Pouncing on the momentum swing, Gauff opened a 4-0 lead which proved unassailable with the 2022 French Open runner-up wrapping up the second to win the match.
“I’m happy with how I played,” Gauff said after the match. “In the first set, I wish I could have closed it sooner, but I was happy with being able to buckle down. And in the second, everything was smooth sailing as well.”
