22 U.S. Governors Express Support for Governor Gavin Newsom Amid Federal Deployment Controversy
In a unified show of support, 22 Democratic governors have publicly backed California Governor Gavin Newsom in response to what they describe as a significant federal overreach by former President Donald Trump.
The governors, aligned through the Democratic Governors Association (DGA), strongly condemned Trump’s decision to deploy the California National Guard without the state’s consultation, calling it “an alarming abuse of power.”
> Democratic Governors Association Statement:
“President Trump’s move to deploy California’s National Guard is an alarming abuse of power. Governors serve as Commanders-in-Chief of their respective National Guards. Federal activation within state borders, without coordination or consent from the governor, is not only ineffective — it is dangerous.”
The DGA further emphasized that this kind of unilateral federal action undermines the authority of state executives and sets a troubling precedent for civil-military relations within the U.S.
The coalition also addressed the Trump administration’s rhetoric surrounding the possible use of U.S. Marines in American neighborhoods. They argue that such threats erode public trust, disrupt civil order, and reflect a lack of faith in local law enforcement.
> “It’s critical that we uphold the constitutional role of our governors,” the statement continued. “We stand with Governor Newsom, who has made it clear that violence is unacceptable, and that local authorities must be allowed to perform their duties without federal interference or intimidation.”
This latest development underscores growing resistance from state-level leaders against federal intrusion, particularly in matters concerning public safety and civil governance. It highlights the broader national debate about the balance of power between state and federal governments — and the role of the military in domestic affairs.
