Chiefs’ Travis Kelce Practicing As If Retirement Isn’t On His Mind
Travis Kelce Shows No Signs of Slowing Down as He Leads Chiefs Through Grueling Training Camp
Kansas City Chiefs’ All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce is not letting thoughts of retirement slow him down. Despite whispers within the NFL community about his future,
The 34-year-old continues to demonstrate his passion for the game, showing up every day at training camp with the energy and commitment of a rookie.
Kelce, who became a three-time Super Bowl champion in February, has had his share of physical challenges throughout his career, including “10 surgeries” he mentioned last fall. Yet, NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated highlighted this week that there is no indication Kelce has lost his love for playing with the Chiefs.
“He’s been beat up,” Breer acknowledged. “He’s accomplished everything a guy at his position can. And yet, at 34 years old, he hasn’t missed a single day of practice in St. Joe when he could easily go to [head coach Andy Reid] and the coaches and ask for veteran days here and there to recharge. That, in turn, sets a tone for everyone else in camp on the importance of being on the field each day as the season nears.”
Kelce himself has expressed his desire to continue adding to his legacy, stating this spring that he’d like to win a “couple more Super Bowls” before considering retirement. However, he also recognizes the importance of “going out on [his] terms,” ensuring that his body doesn’t force him out of the game before he’s ready.
Despite these outside interests and the physical toll of his NFL career, Kelce’s commitment to the Chiefs is unwavering. As Breer pointed out, “Given that the Chiefs run one of the NFL’s most demanding camps, and Reid believes deeply in callousing his team, Kelce setting that tone is invaluable to having everyone locked in as the team prepares for a run at becoming the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls.”
As of Thursday, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Chiefs as the favorites to win Super Bowl LIX, with +500 odds. Whether or not Kelce will cap his illustrious career with another Lombardi Trophy remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: he isn’t done making history just yet.
